Differences Between Resistance-type and Pressure-relief Lubrication Systems
Details may vary by manufacturer, but the principles are similar. The following table compares the two for reference:
Type | Resistance-type (non-metered lubrication) | Pressure-relief type (metered lubrication) |
Description | In resistance-type systems, oil delivery depends on flow resistance: lower resistance gives a larger volume, while higher resistance gives a smaller volume. This is similar to a tap: closing it reduces flow and opening it increases flow. The delivered volume is therefore less precise. | Pressure-relief systems are also called positive-displacement or metered systems. The lubricator has a pressure-relief device, and the distributor first stores oil in a chamber. Only this fixed volume is discharged, providing precise, metered delivery. |
Operating principle | When the lubricator operates, the pump supplies oil to the main line and distributors. The distributors continue delivering oil throughout the lubrication period until that period ends. | When the lubricator operates, the pump supplies oil to the main line and positive-displacement distributors. Once their storage chambers are full, the line and distributors cannot hold further oil. Excess oil is then released through the relief valve inside the lubricator. |
